Furniture Care & Maintenance Guide

Thank you for choosing our furniture. Each piece is crafted with care and designed to provide comfort and longevity. To ensure your furniture maintains its beauty and performance for years to come, we recommend following the guidance below.

Delivery & Unpacking

Care begins from the moment your furniture arrives.

The protective packaging used during transit may temporarily cause light creasing or flattening of fabrics and cushions. Once unwrapped, this will naturally ease. You may gently smooth the fabric by hand or with a clean, dry cloth to restore the pile. Fabrics such as velvet, due to their deeper pile, may take slightly longer to settle. If creasing persists, light brushing in the direction of the pile or professional steaming can help restore its appearance.

Cushions may appear compressed after transit. Plumping and dressing them will redistribute the fillings and restore their shape.

If you notice any loose threads or snags, do not pull them. Carefully trim with sharp scissors.

A subtle “new product” scent is normal and will dissipate as the furniture airs. Allow adequate ventilation in the room during the first few days.

Your furniture may initially feel firmer than the model you experienced in a showroom. This is entirely normal. Through regular use and dressing, the comfort will relax and soften over the first few weeks.

When positioning your furniture:

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which may cause fading or discolouration over time.
  • Place at least 50cm away from heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces.
  • Avoid positioning directly against walls or skirting boards to prevent marking.
  • Always lift furniture by its base when moving it. Never pull by the arms or drag across the floor, as this may weaken the frame or damage the feet.

Please note that lighting conditions, room size and surrounding décor can influence how fabric colour appears in your home compared to showroom displays or website imagery.

Cushion Care & Dressing

Regular maintenance is essential to preserve comfort, structure and appearance.

For best results, cushions should be plumped daily and ideally after each use. This restores air to the filling, maintains shape, and prolongs longevity.

Use only your hands when dressing cushions. Tools or sharp objects may damage fabric or seams.

Fixed Seat Cushions

Firmly press and smooth the seat and back cushions to redistribute fillings evenly. If misshapen, use your hands to guide filling back into the corners. Applying gentle pressure from the front to the back of the cushion will smooth surface creasing.

Removable Cushions

Plump daily and turn regularly where possible. Rotating cushions from left to right helps prevent uneven wear.

To plump more thoroughly:

  • Place the cushion on a clean floor with the zip facing upward.
  • Using an open palm, firmly tap along each side.
  • Rotate and repeat on all four sides.

If required, carefully open the zip and adjust the filling internally to align with the seams and piping.

Scatter Cushions

Hold at the zip edge and shake firmly downward to redistribute the filling before reshaping by hand.

Cushion Fillings

  • Foam cushions naturally recover their shape and typically require weekly plumping and monthly rotation.
  • Fibre and feather cushions require dressing after each use to prevent premature flattening.

Larger seat cushions may lose their plump appearance more quickly than smaller cushions. This is a natural characteristic of the filling and not a fault.

Within the first three to six months, expect cushions to settle and compress:

  • Foam cushions: approximately 10–15%
  • Fibre and feather cushions: approximately 10–20%

This is part of the natural conditioning process and contributes to long-term comfort.

Avoid sitting on the front edges of cushions or on the arms of sofas, as this may distort fillings and strain the frame.

Fabric Upholstery Care

Preventative care will significantly extend the life of your furniture.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Covers, cushions and interiors should not be hand or machine washed unless explicitly stated on the care label. Washing may distort shape, damage fabric, or compromise fire-retardant treatments. Zipped covers are not necessarily designed for removal.

We recommend professional upholstery cleaning annually to maintain fabric appearance and longevity.

For loose-cover models, always clean all covers at the same time to avoid colour variation. Even when removable, professional in-situ cleaning is generally advised for the best and most consistent result.

Regularly remove dust using a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush attachment or a clean, dry white cloth. Avoid hard brushes or direct suction on delicate fabrics. Clean beneath cushions where possible.

Spillages & Stains

In the event of a spill:

1. Act promptly.

2. Blot gently with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel.

3. Never rub, as this may damage fibres or spread the stain.

4. For thicker spills, carefully lift excess using a spoon or blunt utensil.

5. Work from the outside of the stain inward.

Oil- or grease-based stains should be treated by a professional cleaning specialist.

Be mindful that certain products — including hair treatments, cosmetics, tanning lotions and body oils — may damage fabric. Dark or heavily dyed clothing can transfer colour onto lighter upholstery. Newspaper ink may also stain if left in contact.

Velvet and chenille fabrics have a directional pile that may appear lighter or darker depending on the angle of light. Flattening over time is a natural characteristic. Light brushing in the direction of the pile or professional steaming can help revive its appearance.

Avoid excessive moisture when cleaning, as over-wetting can loosen the weave and cause a baggy appearance.

Pilling or bobbling may occur depending on fabric composition and clothing abrasion. This is a normal characteristic and not a defect.

Pets should not be left unattended on upholstered furniture, as claws may pull threads or damage fabric.

Leather Upholstery Care

Leather is a natural material, valued for its individuality.

Variations in tone, grain, texture, wrinkles, brands and scars are natural characteristics and hallmarks of authenticity — not imperfections. Colour and finish may vary slightly between pieces.

With use, leather will relax and form soft creases, sometimes referred to as “puddling.” This is a natural process and contributes to the character of the piece. Gently smoothing the leather after use will help maintain its shape.

Over time, your leather furniture will develop a rich patina unique to your home.

Cleaning

Attend to spills immediately using a clean, dry cloth. Blot gently — never rub.

Regularly wipe areas that come into contact with hands, arms or hair to prevent build-up of natural oils or product residue.

Do not use household cleaning products, including washing-up liquid, soaps, bleach, detergents, oils or all-purpose cleaners. These can damage the leather finish and lead to cracking or peeling.

We recommend periodic professional leather cleaning using products specifically suited to your leather type.

Dust may be removed using a soft, dry cloth or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Avoid direct suction on the leather surface.

As with fabric upholstery, position leather furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources, including radiators and electronic devices, to prevent drying or cracking.

Sharp objects such as keys, belt buckles or pet claws can damage leather surfaces and should be kept away.

Leather cushion covers must never be machine or hand washed.

Frame Care

The structural integrity of your furniture depends on correct use.

  • Always lift furniture by the base when moving.
  • Do not sit on arms or back rails.
  • Avoid jumping or standing on seating platforms, as this may displace springs or supportive webbing.
  • Minimise frequent repositioning once installed.

Sofa Bed Care

Sofa beds require the same care as standard sofas, with additional attention to the mechanism.

Upon delivery, allow both the sofa and mattress to air thoroughly. A new mattress may initially feel firmer but will soften with use.

When opening the mechanism, always pull from the centre to avoid twisting the frame. Ensure any transit ties are removed before first use.

Do not sit on the edge of the extended bed frame, as this may cause bending. If resistance is felt when closing, do not force the mechanism.

Removal of the bed mechanism or arms should only be carried out by two competent adults. If unsure, please contact customer services for guidance.

Mattress Care

Where possible, mattresses should be flipped and rotated every 3–6 months. If non-turn, rotate from head to foot only.

We recommend:

  • Using a mattress protector to guard against moisture, dust and staining.
  • Washing bedding weekly.
  • Allowing the mattress to air when changing sheets.
  • Vacuuming the mattress surface and sides every six months using an upholstery attachment.

For minor stains, use a gentle cleanser sparingly. Avoid excessive moisture, particularly on memory foam. Once fully dry, sprinkling baking soda over the surface and vacuuming after several hours can help neutralise odours.

Depending on frequency of use, mattresses typically require replacement every 8–10 years.

A Final Note

With thoughtful care and regular maintenance, your furniture will continue to provide comfort, beauty and performance for many years. Many of the characteristics described above reflect the natural behaviour of quality materials and are not faults, but part of the evolving character of your piece.
